How to Choose a Therapist: A Guide to Finding the Right Fit

Kevin Greene

When you finally decide to reach out for help, you’ve already done something brave — you’ve acknowledged you deserve support. But then comes the big question: How do you choose a therapist who’s right for you?

It can feel overwhelming at first — there are so many profiles, credentials, and smiling headshots to scroll through. The good news is that with a little guidance (and some self-reflection), you can find a therapist who not only meets your needs but helps you feel truly heard and understood.

Let’s walk through the most important steps in choosing a therapist, so you can move forward with confidence.

Understand What You’re Looking For

Before you start browsing directories, take a few moments to consider what you hope to get out of therapy. Ask yourself:

  • Do I want help with a specific issue (like anxiety, parenting, or relationship challenges)?
  • Do I prefer someone who listens quietly or someone who gives active feedback?
  • Am I comfortable with virtual sessions, or do I want to meet in person?

Your answers will help narrow down your options and save you time. And you may just feel “off” and not know what the cause is. A therapist could help you figure that out too. One thing to consider: if travel is not an issue an in person session may be the best option. There are usually more treatment options available in an office than online.

Learn About Credentials and Specialties

Therapists can have different credentials — psychotherapist, social worker, psychologist — and each has slightly different training. Don’t get too hung up on the letters after their name, but do check if they’re registered with a governing body in your area (in Ontario, for example, you can check the CRPO public register for psychotherapists).

If you’re struggling with something specific, it can also help to look for someone who specializes in that area — whether it’s trauma-informed care, play therapy for kids, or couples counselling.

At Health & Happiness: Counselling and Wellness we have extensive experience in many areas. These include neurodiversity (Autism, ADHD, etc.), parent coaching, family and couples therapy, and many others.

Pay Attention to Fit

Here’s the truth: the most important factor in successful therapy isn’t the therapist’s office decor or their reception area — it’s the relationship you build with them. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship accounts for much of the progress people make.

When you talk to a potential therapist (even just in an initial consultation), notice:

  • Do you feel safe and understood?
  • Are they listening to what you say, or jumping to conclusions?
  • Do they explain their approach clearly and answer your questions?

If it doesn’t feel right, that’s okay — it’s perfectly fine to try someone else. You deserve to feel comfortable. In fact: be selfish! This really is all about you.

Practical Considerations

Don’t forget the practical details:

  • Location & accessibility: Is the office convenient? Does it feel welcoming?
  • Fees & insurance: Do they fit your budget? Are they covered by your insurance?
  • Availability: Do they have times that work for you?

One last point: get a free consultation. All of the therapists at HHCW, offer a no-charge virtual consultation so you can meet with them before committing to a paid session.

Give Yourself Permission to Shop Around

This is your journey, and you’re allowed to take your time to find someone who feels right. Many therapists offer a free phone or video consultation — take advantage of this to ask questions and get a sense of their style.

And remember: choosing a therapist is a big step toward taking care of yourself. You’re not being “picky” — you’re investing in your well-being.
